Jenschke Orchards on Wine Road 290 is the Hill Country's classic fall farm day, and it's about ten minutes from Firefly. This year's centerpiece is a five-acre corn maze celebrating America's 250th birthday, and the You-Pick patch lets you cut your own pumpkin straight off the vine (pre-cut pumpkins are there too if you'd rather not crawl the rows). Give the maze 20 to 30 minutes, then hit the flower field, the barnyard and the giant corn pit. There's a restaurant, tasting room and farm store on the property for when everyone needs a break.

Fall hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with admission closing at 4:30. Tickets are sold online or at the gate. Leashed dogs are welcome on the farm but not in the buildings or on the wagon rides.

Vogel Orchard (S. US Hwy 87): a working u-pick fruit farm where pumpkins carry the picking season into October. No bounce houses, just pumpkins.

Hill Country Herb Garden (2150 S. US Hwy 87): the pumpkin patch has opened around the second week of October in past years, and the property throws a family "Halloween in The Garden" evening near the 31st with live music, a kids' buffet, mini pumpkin decorating, a caramel apple station, a kids' costume contest and cider. 2. Watch three million bats pour out of a tunnel at dusk

If you do one Halloween-worthy thing this trip, make it Old Tunnel State Park. About 11 miles south of Fredericksburg, this abandoned railroad tunnel is home to an estimated 3 million Mexican free-tailed bats plus around 3,000 cave myotis. Every evening they spiral upward, counter-clockwise, to gain altitude, then scatter to feed on moths. On a big night the colony eats more than 25 tons of them.

The logistics matter here. Tickets must be bought in advance online or by phone, up to 60 days before your visit, and nothing is sold at the gate. The upper viewing area is $2 per person for all ages; the lower viewing area is $5 per person, ages 4 and up, because of the bats' sensitivity to noise. The lower area, where you can hear the wings and feel the breeze they make, runs Thursday through Sunday, and rangers lead a program 30 minutes to an hour before the emergence. Arrive an hour earlier than the recent emergence times the park posts on its Facebook page, screenshot your tickets because cell service is spotty, and leave the dog at the resort: no pets, no smoking, no camping.

Firefly tip: Bat programs run nightly from May 1 through October 31, so Halloween night 2026 is the season finale, and because it's a Saturday the lower viewing area is open. 3. Do Halloween on Wine Road 290

Firefly sits on Ranch Road 1376 just below Wine Road 290, which is why so many guests never move the truck all weekend. Late October is the best time of year to be on a winery patio: crush is over, crowds are lighter than in spring, and sweater weather finally shows up.

Fredericksburg Food & Wine Festival, October 22–25. The big one. Four days that run from a bluff-top Opening Night to a street-side four-course dinner, the region's largest Grand Tasting, and a waterfront brunch to close the weekend. Every winery, chef, brewery and distillery pouring has to be based in the Texas Hill Country, and a portion of proceeds supports the Hill Country Hospitality Workers Emergency Relief Fund. Costume contests at the wineries. Tasting rooms up and down 290 throw costume parties the weekend before Halloween. The standout tradition is Michael Ros Winery's People & Pups Halloween Costume Contest, with a prize for the best human costume and one for the best dog costume; last year's judging ran 4 to 6 p.m. and you had to be present to win. 4. Oktoberfest on Marktplatz, October 2–4

Not technically Halloween, but it's the weekend that kicks off the whole season, and it's the busiest weekend of the year in town. From October 2–4, 2026, Marktplatz turns into a Bavarian village for the festival's 46th year, with oompah bands, polkas and waltzes on five covered stages; USA TODAY's 10Best readers ranked it the number five Oktoberfest in the country in 2025. Expect 50 varieties of beer, Texas wine, artisan vendors and a kids' area. Gates are open 6 p.m. to midnight Friday, 10 a.m. to midnight Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. One-day passes are $15, two-day $20, three-day $25.

Firefly tip: Park at the Gillespie County Fairgrounds and take the Oktoberfest Park & Ride to the gate; you can buy admission and food tickets at the lot to skip the lines. 5. Ghost walk, the 1885 jail and the German cemeteries

The Haunted Fredericksburg Ghost Walk and Jail Tour is a one-mile, roughly 90-minute stroll through local history led by guides in 1800s attire. Tours run Thursdays and Fridays at 8:30 p.m., Saturdays at 8:30 and 9:30, and Sundays at 8:30. They're kid-friendly, and they start at the corner of Main and Washington.

For a deeper chill, the historic county jail, built in 1885, opens for tours the first Saturday of every month. Admission is included in a Pioneer Museum day pass, or $5 per person ages 6 and up for the jail alone, cash only at the jail. In 2026 that first Saturday is October 3, so you can pair it with Oktoberfest.

Daylight option: Fredericksburg's two historic cemeteries, Der Stadt Friedhof on the 300 block of North Lee Street and the Catholic Cemetery on Catholic Cemetery Road, are known for their granite markers and headstones, many carved in German. 6. Hike Enchanted Rock while the weather is perfect

October is when Enchanted Rock stops being a sufferfest. The Summit Trail goes straight up the 425-foot pink granite dome, the Loop Trail is the more moderate route, and the park is a designated International Dark Sky Park with some of the clearest night skies in Texas. It's roughly 40 minutes from Firefly.

Reservations are required to enter Friday through Monday, on holidays and during school breaks. Entrance is $8 per adult and children 12 and under are free. Weekend day passes sell out in October, so reserve as soon as you book your site. The rangers lean into the holiday, too: last year's Halloween weekend included a Create-a-Cryptid program where kids learned about native animals from a ranger, then invented their own Texas cryptid. 7. Halloween night: Main Street, Rockbox and Luckenbach

Families: On Halloween, downtown shops and locals open their doors to trick-or-treaters and hand out candy in a safe, festive setting. Park once, walk Main Street in costume, and finish with ice cream. Confirm the afternoon hours with the shops the week of.

Grown-ups: Two picks the same week. Ghouls Night Out is a boho-western boutique party at Loca On Main, 201 E. Main St., on Thursday, October 29 starting at 2 p.m. Then on Friday, October 30 at 7:30 p.m., Rockbox Theater hosts the Dark Side of the Moon Halloween Concert in the Dark & Costume Party: Pink Floyd's whole album, performed with the lights off.
